Backup questions.

Where is the data stored?
On a dedicated backup node in Amsterdam, physically separated from compute nodes. ZFS RAIDZ2 (8 disks, 2 parity) — survives any 2 disk failures with zero data loss.
Is the data encrypted?
Encrypt client-side with your own key (Restic, Borg, Duplicacy all do this by default). We literally cannot see your file contents — we hold encrypted blobs. ZFS encryption-at-rest is also enabled on our end as a second layer.
Do you charge per restore or per request?
No. Flat monthly fee for capacity. Unlimited backups, unlimited restores, unlimited API requests. No surprise egress bill.
Is there a retention limit?
You control retention via your backup tool's policies (e.g. borg prune or restic forget). We don't delete anything for you — your bucket, your rules. As long as you have capacity, you keep versions.
Can I increase capacity later?
Yes, instant. Click upgrade in the client area, the new quota applies immediately. Downgrades require keeping usage below the new limit first.
What if my server is hacked or ransomware'd?
Two things help: (1) the backup endpoint requires separate credentials from your server, and (2) you can enable append-only mode on your bucket — backups can be added but not deleted, blocking ransomware from wiping your history. Contact support to enable.
Can I use this with a non-PapilioHost server?
Yes. It's a plain S3 endpoint — back up servers anywhere. Your home NAS, your AWS instances, your office PC — all fair game.
